Essential oil scented vinegar rinse
Plain old white vinegar effectively replaces fabric softeners. Even disregarding the environmental impact of fabric softeners (or the related allergies, sensitization problems etc.), vinegar has the added advantage of keeping your washing machine in perfect working conditions by removing soap and scum build-ups. Vinegar is also recommended in the last rinse when washing coloured clothes, because it revives the colors (especially the dark ones).
In general, the faint vinegary smell disappears quickly enough if you hang your washing in the sun. However, if this is not possible, the best way to avoid wearing vinegar smelling clothes is to prepare an essential oil scented vinegar for your laundry!
- The vinegar and essential oil proportions are:
- 1 litre white vinegar
- 1 ts (5 ml) essential oil
Prepare your essential oil scented vinegar in advance, and keep the bottle in the laundry (shake well before each use). Half a cup of this scented vinegar, added to the last rinse, is usually enough to keep your washing machine clean and give your clothes a lovely, clean scent. Australian Eucalyptus is particularly recommended for its disinfectant, deodorising and moth-repelling properties.
Since I like variety, I play around with different essential oils and make up a new blend each time I open a new bottle of vinegar. For instance, you might like to try the following:
Essential oil blends for the laundry
- Balsamic:
- 1 part each Australian Eucalyptus, Pine and Rosemary
- Salty Dog:
- 2 parts Australian Nerolina, 1 part Lemon myrtle, 1 part Rosemary, 1 part Pine
- Moth Buster:
- 2 parts Australian Eucalyptus, 1 part Lemon tea-tree, 1 part Peppermint
- Romance:
- 2 parts Australian Rosalina, 1 part Australian Sandalwood, 1 part Rose Geranium, 1 part Ylang Ylang
- Sweet Baby:
- 2 parts Australian Nerolina, 2 parts Palmarosa, 1 part Eucalyptus radiata or Tea-tree soft-scent
